A Vintage Faith Pt 2

God's Word

Many think that the Bible is a good book, a tool used by the rich to enslave the poor or by men to enslave women, etc.

What does Bible say about itself.

2 Samuel 22:31 ESV

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

It is God's infallible word.

God's Word
2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Some translated say inspired.  The word in Greek means that it is breathed into man by God.  Profitable means does us good.  The word is good to equip us. How? Teaching us, reproofing, correcting and training.  Many of these may be painful to us.

It is like looking at a mirror.  We do not look at a mirror to see what is right, we look to see what is wrong so that we can improve it.

God's Word
Hebrews 4:12 ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Living and active means that it is always pertinent to us no matter what the time we are in our life.
His word examines you and will speak to you where you need it to.

God's Word
2 Peter 1:21 ESV

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

God is the author but He used men to put pen to the paper.

God's Word
1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV

"For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.

Who would claim that they had all the knowledge that they needed and do not need the Bible? None of us would.

My faith in God makes me believe that the 66 books in the Bible are what is supposed to be there.

Canon: rule or standard

Rulers, what do we use them for?  To create or measure a straight line.  It helps us to measure things. It is a standard that other things can be judged by.

The Bible is a ruler. We measure things against God's word.  If anything conflicts with the Bible, then we measure that we judge all other things by.

Word Bible means book.  Originally Biblia meaning books.  Changed by early church fathers to show though it is 66 books, but one combined book.

Jeremiah 1:12 shows that God watched over His word.

The Church is built on the foundation of the apostles (New Testament epistles) and Prophets (Old Testament) with Christ Jesus (Gospels) as the Chief Cornerstone.

Cornerstone is the first stone in the building. It is essential to stay put as if it was removed then the whole structure would collapse.  Everything hinges around Jesus (the Gospels).

Internal references are in the Bible.
Luke refers to other writers of Gospel
Paul refers to Luke.
Peter refers to Paul and the letters that he had written.

Early church leaders decided which books were cannon.  Only later did councils get together and fully established.

Why is it needed?  We need to know what God has to say in our lives.
